Tryout Process

Boys and Girls Travel Team Tryouts are conducted each fall by the Cohasset Basketball Boosters Board members.  Our goal is to minimize cuts and place as many players as possible on teams that are appropriate for their skill level.

A tryout coordinator chooses several independent volunteer evaluators for each grade. Random numbered pinnies are assigned to each player for the tryouts.  Each evaluator rates each players performance in various categories and makes suggestions for which team and level each player should play.  Performance in the tryout holds the most weight among several factors in deciding teams.  A selection committee reviews all the information about each player and makes final recommendations to the board. The Boosters Board votes on final rosters and coaches in a board meeting before teams and coaches are announced, usually within a couple weeks after tryouts conclude.

We wish we did not have to pick “A”, “B” and “C” teams. How many teams in each grade depends on how many signups per grade with most teams having between 8-15 players.  Each league asks us to enter our teams based on skill level and for these reason we cannot “even out” our teams. Certain leagues have divisions that are based on many factors such as town size, previous team records, etc. Each town has a representative that helps decides how things work within each league.

We appreciate constructive feedback about our process and the volunteers conducting tryouts. We understand it will never be perfect but we do work hard to try to get it right as we take the process seriously.  We are always looking for volunteers starting at younger grades to help coordinate activities, coach, evaluate during tryouts, run scoreboards, help with uniforms, be a future board member, help us raise money, find sponsors, etc.

Travel Basketball – Boys

Our Travel Basketball Program starts in 4th grade and goes through the 8th grade. The program consists of two practices per week and typically home and away games on weekends.  Cohasset teams are entered into a local league and play home and away games mostly against South Shore towns within a 30-45 minutes drive.

We encourage any players with an interest in basketball to tryout for travel or inquire about our Ellinger In-Town program.  Basketball is a very fun and rewarding sport that exercises the entire body from mind to toe. The skills developed in this competitive sport translate to many other sports as well.

Tryouts for travel teams typically start in mid-late September.  Independent evaluators help determine the appropriate placement for each of the players at tryouts. The goal of our board and selection committees is not make cuts. Each boys grade usually has between 1-3 teams.

Once teams are decided, practices begin in November and games usually start in early December and run into early to mid-March. Each league has an up to date schedule on their website.

We do ask for a commitment of attending most practices and games. An occasional missed practice or game is understandable, but we ask players to prioritize basketball during basketball season if they made the commitment to their teammates and coaches.

All players will play.  We can’t promise equal playing time at the older ages but we promote this in the younger grades. We require our coaches to follow our rules that match or exceed league requirements on playing time.  Most coaches try to be as fair as possible but do have some discretion on playing time that should be based on things such as practice & game attendance, attitude, and on court execution.

We encourage practices and the game experiences to be fun for all players while still teaching and learning valuable lifetime skills and concepts that can be applied on and off the court.  Basketball provides a valuable team experience with memories that last a lifetime.

The fee for travel basketball in 2023-2024 is $375. The fee includes uniforms, ref & gym fees, etc.

4th Grade Girls

2022-23 Coaches: Bill Rennie and Marybeth Reardon

This team plays in the Old Colony League (OCL) and all games take place at Indian Head Elementary School in Hansen.  After starting out with a 2-6 record, the girls won their next 6 of 7 to finish the regular season above .500. They qualified for the playoffs as a 6th seed and put up a good fight against a strong Pembroke team but ultimately lost.  Their coaches are very proud of how much each player improved and the excellent sportsmanship the team demonstrated throughout the season.
